About the Shalya Parva
The final day, with Shalya as commander — his fall and the rout of the Kauravas, and the mace-duel between Bhima and Duryodhana in which Bhima, striking below the waist, breaks Duryodhana’s thighs and ends the war.
How it is read
The Shalya Parva is given below in its original Sanskrit (Devanagari), numbered by chapter (adhyaya) and shloka. Read verse by verse; the Mahabharata is traditionally heard as itihasa-shravana, for dharma and discernment.

Then, with great difficulty, King Dhritarashtra slowly regained his senses, worn thin by grief for his sons.
Having regained consciousness, that king, trembling and deeply grieved, looked about in every direction and spoke this word to Vidura.

Sanjaya too wept there on seeing the king so afflicted, as did all the women and the illustrious Gandhari.

Then, O scorcher of foes, Sanjaya, wretched himself, beheld the king, who had regained his senses, weeping and greatly afflicted.
With joined palms, Vidura consoled that lord of men, who sighed again and again, with gentle words.
Vaisampayana said: Then, when the women had been sent away, Dhritarashtra, Ambika's son, lamented, sinking into grief deeper than before.
Sighing as if breathing smoke, and wringing his hands again and again, he reflected, O great king, and then spoke these words.

O Sanjaya, for one who has reached this state, with wings clipped, there is truly no better good than going to the forest.

What is the Mahabharata?
The Mahabharata is the great Sanskrit itihasa (epic) composed by Maharishi Vyasa, telling of the Kuru dynasty and the war between the Pandavas and the Kauravas at Kurukshetra. In its eighteen parvas (books) it contains the Bhagavad Gita, the Vishnu Sahasranama and a vast treasury of dharma, and is revered as the fifth Veda.
