The Kuber Mantra invokes the treasurer of the gods to remove financial obstacles and invite steady, honest prosperity into one's life.
Who is Kuber Dev?
In Sanatan Dharma, Kuber (also called Kubera) is revered as the treasurer of the Devas and the lord of wealth, riches and the northern direction (Uttar Disha). He is described in the Puranas as the son of sage Vishrava and is worshipped alongside Goddess Lakshmi, especially during Dhanteras and Diwali, when Kuber Puja is performed to invite prosperity that is stable, righteous and long-lasting. Unlike wealth gained through shortcuts, the blessings of Kuber are associated with dharmic, well-earned abundance protected from loss and misuse.
Kuber is depicted as a stout figure adorned with jewels, holding a mongoose (nakula) that spits out gems, symbolising the release of hoarded wealth for good use, and a money pot (kalasha) signifying inexhaustible riches shared with those who live righteously.
Complete Kuber Mantra (Devanagari)
ॐ यक्षाय कुबेराय वैश्रवणाय धनधान्याधिपतये धनधान्यसमृद्धिं मे देहि दापय स्वाहा॥
This is the most widely chanted and complete form of the Kuber Mantra, drawn from traditional tantric and puranic worship of the wealth-lord. A shorter beej (seed) form used for quick daily chanting is:
ॐ श्रीं ह्रीं क्लीं श्रीं कुबेराय नमः॥
Both forms may be used; the longer mantra is preferred for dedicated sadhana while the beej mantra suits quick daily invocation.
Meaning of the Mantra
Om, salutations to the Yaksha (celestial being) Kubera, son of Vishrava, the lord of grains and wealth; grant me abundance of wealth and grains, and cause it to be given to me. Swaha, the offering is complete.
The mantra is a direct, humble request to the deity who governs material abundance, not for excess or greed but for sufficiency, stability and the ability to sustain one's family and dharmic duties without financial worry.
Why Chant the Kuber Mantra
Devotees chant this mantra when facing financial stagnation, mounting debts, unstable income, or when starting a new business or investment. It is also chanted before Diwali and Dhanteras pujas to invite Lakshmi and Kuber together, since Lakshmi represents the flow of wealth and Kuber represents its protection and accumulation. Regular chanting is believed to instil financial discipline, attract new opportunities, and safeguard existing wealth from wasteful expenditure.
How and When to Chant
Best time: Early morning after bathing, or during Pradosh Kaal (twilight) on Fridays; Dhanteras and Diwali night are especially powerful.
Direction: Face north (Uttar disha), the direction associated with Kuber.
Seat: Sit on a yellow or red aasan (mat) rather than directly on the floor.
Mala: Use a Kamalgatta (lotus seed) mala or Sphatik (crystal) mala for counting.
Count: Chant 108 times (one mala) daily for 21 or 43 days for visible results; a single mala daily is sufficient for ongoing blessings.
Offering: Light a ghee lamp facing north, offer yellow flowers, and if possible keep a small idol or yantra of Kuber along with a few coins or a kalash during the chanting.
Do's and Don'ts
Do maintain cleanliness of body and place, keep the mind calm and free from greed while chanting, and pair the practice with honest effort in work or business.
Do not chant with an intention to harm others' prosperity or to gain wealth through unfair means, as this contradicts the dharmic spirit of the mantra.
Avoid chanting in a dirty or cluttered space, and avoid non-vegetarian food or alcohol on the day of chanting for best results.
Mahatmya (Glory) of Kuber Worship
Ancient texts describe Kuber as the guardian of the eight directions of wealth (Ashta Lakshmi's protector in the material realm) and as one who was granted his position due to his penance and devotion to Lord Shiva. His abode, Alkapuri, is described as a city of unimaginable riches, yet Kuber himself is portrayed as a humble devotee, teaching that true wealth is meant to be shared and used for dharma, not hoarded in ego. Worshipping him alongside Lakshmi Mata is considered essential for wealth that stays and multiplies rather than wealth that comes and vanishes quickly.
