About Shri Mahalakshmi (Ambabai) MandirShri Mahalakshmi Mandir at Kolhapur, worshipped by devotees as Ambabai, is one of the great Shakti Peeths of Maharashtra and the earthly home of Maa Lakshmi. By the Karavira Mahatmya, Lakshmi left Vaikuntha and chose Karvir, as Kolhapur was known, as the place she would dwell — so she is held to reside here permanently. The black-stone temple traces to the Chalukya era, and here Maa Lakshmi is the swayambhu Mahalakshmi. On Lakshmi Puja, the Diwali night, devotees come to seek the Devi who stays, that her abundance may enter and remain in their own home.
