Shri Mahakaleshwar Teerth Kshetra at Ujjain enshrines Mahakaal — the swayambhu, south-facing Jyotirlinga, self-manifest and worshipped as Kaal itself, lord of time and of the ancient city of Avantika. It is the only one of the twelve Jyotirlingas that faces south, and the Bhasma Aarti performed here at dawn is offered nowhere else in the same form.
Devotees come to Mahakaal when time itself feels to have turned against them — a delay that will not break, an illness that will not lift, a fear of akaal mrityu. The Rudrabhishek and the Maha Mrityunjaya jaap are the sevas most often taken here, and both are performed in your naam-gotra by an acharya of the Kshetra.
