Correct Vastu Direction for Water Tank

In Vastu Shastra, water is regarded as one of the five great elements (Pancha Mahabhuta) that govern the energy of a home. Water represents Lord Varuna, the deity of oceans and rain, and is associated with prosperity, purity and the free flow of positive energy. Because water sources like underground tanks, borewells, sumps and overhead tanks are permanent, hard-to-change structures, getting their direction right at the planning stage is considered very important for the long-term wellbeing of a household.

Vastu Shastra divides a plot into eight directions, each ruled by a presiding deity and associated with specific elements. Water is naturally linked to the North-East (Ishan) direction, which is ruled by Lord Shiva and is considered the most sacred and auspicious corner of any home. Placing water sources correctly is believed to invite health, harmony and financial stability, while placing them incorrectly is believed to invite instability, disputes and health troubles, particularly related to the kidneys, blood and emotional balance, since water governs these in the body according to traditional belief.

The North-East (Ishan) corner of the plot is considered the ideal direction for an underground water tank, borewell or sump. This corner should ideally be kept low, open and clean, and a water source here is said to enhance clarity of mind, spiritual growth and the inflow of wealth for the family.

The North direction is the second-best choice for underground water storage. North is ruled by Kubera, the deity of wealth, and a water source here is also considered auspicious for financial growth.

The East direction, ruled by the Sun, is a third acceptable option, particularly for a borewell, since the morning sunlight is believed to purify the water energetically.

Directions to avoid for underground water sources include the South-West (Nairutya), which governs stability and relationships and should always remain heavy, solid and dry; the South, associated with Yama and stability; and the South-East (Agneya), which is the fire corner and considered incompatible with the water element. Placing an underground tank or borewell in these zones is traditionally believed to disturb finances, relationships and health.

An overhead water tank behaves differently from an underground one because it is a raised, heavy structure. For an overhead tank, the South-West direction of the terrace is considered most suitable, since South-West should carry the heaviest weight in a home, and a full water tank provides good grounding energy there. The West direction is the second choice for an overhead tank.

The North-East corner of the terrace should be kept as light and open as possible, so an overhead tank should never be placed there, as heavy weight in Ishan is believed to suppress the very energy that a ground-floor water source in that direction is meant to enhance.

A sump used for collecting municipal or rainwater follows the same principles as an underground tank, and North-East or North remain the preferred zones. A traditional well, if being newly constructed on a plot, is best placed in the North-East as well. Decorative water features such as fountains or small ponds inside a home or garden are also considered auspicious in the North-East, provided the water is kept clean and flowing rather than stagnant, since stagnant water is believed to attract negative energy.

If an underground tank or borewell already exists in the South-West, South or South-East and cannot be relocated, complete demolition and rebuilding is not always necessary. Traditional remedies include keeping that specific zone visually light through mirrors, using the colour white or light blue in tiles or paint nearby, ensuring the tank overflow and inlet pipes are not leaking, keeping the area extremely clean, and placing a small Kuber yantra or a picture of Lord Varuna near the main water source with a diya lit occasionally on Wednesdays. Growing tulsi or other water-loving plants near a South-East borewell is also considered a gentle balancing remedy.

An overhead tank wrongly placed in the North-East can be balanced by ensuring it is not overly large in proportion to the roof, keeping that specific area of the terrace otherwise clutter-free, and, where structurally feasible, gradually shifting future construction weight towards South-West.

Do keep all water storage structures clean and regularly maintained, since stagnant or dirty water is considered inauspicious regardless of direction. Do ensure water tanks and taps are leak-free, as continuously dripping or wasted water is believed to symbolically drain away prosperity. Do keep the North-East corner of the plot open, unobstructed and lower than the rest of the house wherever the layout allows.

Do not place toilets, garbage bins or a kitchen fire directly adjacent to the main underground water source. Do not let the South-West corner remain empty or under-constructed while placing water tanks there, as South-West needs solidity, not water storage at ground level. Do not ignore chronic leaks near a wrongly placed tank, since Vastu remedies work best in combination with basic structural upkeep.
