Ideal Direction for the Living Room

The North, East or North-East part of the house is considered the most auspicious location for a living room, as these directions welcome light, fresh energy and positive vibrations that support open, warm hospitality. A living room in the North-East also benefits from proximity to Ishaan energy, believed to bring clarity and goodwill to conversations and family interactions held there. If space constraints require the living room to be elsewhere, the general Vastu advice is to keep this particular zone as open, bright and welcoming as possible regardless of exact placement.

Main Door and Entrance

Since the living room usually connects directly to the main entrance, the doorway itself carries great Vastu significance. The main door should ideally be in the North, East or North-East wall of the home, opening inward in a clockwise direction, and should never creak, stick or remain obstructed, as this is believed to hinder the smooth entry of positive energy along with guests. A coffee table or low centre table is generally acceptable here, as it does not obstruct the space significantly, but oversized furniture in the centre is best avoided.

Colours for the Living Room

Light, warm and welcoming colours are recommended for a living room's walls and furnishings, such as light yellow, cream, beige, light green or soft blue. These shades are believed to create an inviting, energetic atmosphere suitable for conversation and gathering. Very dark colours, particularly black or dark grey used extensively across walls, are generally discouraged, as they are thought to absorb rather than reflect positive energy, making the space feel heavier than intended.

Decor, Plants and Symbols

Fresh plants, particularly money plants or tulsi placed near a window, are considered auspicious additions to a living room, symbolising growth and purity. Images or idols of deities are usually better suited to a dedicated puja room, though a tasteful painting or wall hanging of a deity, mountain landscape, flowing river, or rising sun in the North or East can add auspicious energy to the living room without overwhelming it. Wilted plants, broken decor pieces, or heavily thorny plants like cacti are best avoided inside the living room, as they are believed to introduce stagnant or sharp, discordant energy.
