The Story (Vrat Katha) There was an old woman who woke up before sunrise every Sunday. She would clean her house with cow dung (considered purifying), take a bath, and offer water (Arghya) to the Sun God. She cooked food only after her worship. Because of this, she was very healthy and happy.
Her neighbor, who was jealous, saw that the old woman used cow dung from the neighbor’s cow. To stop her, the neighbor tethered her cow inside the house so it wouldn’t defecate outside.
Unable to find cow dung, the old woman could not clean her house or perform her Puja. She fasted the whole day in sorrow and did not eat or drink. She slept hungry.
Lord Surya was moved by her unintentional strict fast. He appeared in her dream and blessed her with a beautiful cow that produced gold instead of dung!
The jealous neighbor saw the gold and tried to steal it, but the King’s soldiers caught her. The King realized the miracle of the old woman’s devotion. He declared that everyone in the kingdom should observe the Ravivar Vrat.
