Chhath Puja is one of the most ancient and revered festivals of the Sun, offered over four days of fasting and purity to Surya, the pratyaksha devata, the visible god and the source of all life, and to Chhathi Maiya, his sister, who is held to grant children long life and good health. By the Kashi Khanda, Chhath began at the ghats of Varanasi and spread from there across the land. Standing in the Ganga at sunset and again at sunrise, devotees offer arghya of gangajal, fruits and a soop of prasad to the setting and rising sun, in gratitude for life and in prayer for the health and vitality of the whole family.
The Chhath surya-arghya and Surya-Namaskar sankalp is carried at the Ganga ghat, Varanasi, in your naam-gotra, on Kartik Shukla Shashti, at the sandhya arghya.
Devotees want the sankalp carried with care, a clear ritual, a clear video, and a clear naam-gotra spoken with the arghya to Surya at the Ganga ghat.
