The Navgrah Shanti Mantras are the individual beej and Vedic mantras for the nine planets, chanted to pacify unfavourable planetary influences and restore balance and harmony in life.
In Vedic astrology, the nine grahas, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu and Ketu, are believed to influence every aspect of human life, from health and wealth to relationships, career and inner temperament. When a graha is weak, afflicted, or passing through a challenging period in one's birth chart, such as Sade Sati of Shani or an unfavourable Mahadasha, its energy can manifest as obstacles, delays, ill health or emotional turbulence. The Navgrah Shanti Mantras are the traditional Vedic remedy for such times, a set of nine mantras, one for each planet, chanted to calm and align that planet's energy with one's wellbeing.
It is important to understand these mantras not as tools of fatalistic prediction but as dharmic, hopeful remedies. No planetary position is considered a fixed, unchangeable doom; sincere worship, mantra and good conduct are believed in the Vedic tradition to soften even the most challenging planetary period. This article is offered as general spiritual guidance and is not a substitute for a detailed, personalised consultation with a qualified astrologer.

The Navgrah Gayatri Mantras (Vedic form)
For deeper worship, each graha also has a Vedic Gayatri mantra used in Navgrah Puja and Homa:
How to chant the Navgrah Shanti Mantras
One may chant the mantra of only the specific planet troubling them, or chant all nine as a complete circuit for general planetary harmony. Sit facing east after a morning bath, light a diya, and if possible use a mala of the gemstone or bead associated with that graha, such as rudraksha for Shani or a red sandalwood mala for Mangal. Chant the chosen mantra 108 times, ideally on the day of the week ruled by that planet, Sunday for Surya, Monday for Chandra, Tuesday for Mangal, Wednesday for Budh, Thursday for Guru, Friday for Shukra, and Saturday for both Shani and the nodes Rahu-Ketu.
A structured 40-day anushthan, chanting daily at the same time, is traditionally recommended for a graha causing significant difficulty, often alongside daan, wearing of an appropriate gemstone only after proper astrological confirmation, and visiting a Navgrah temple on an auspicious day.
Simple daily remedies for planetary peace
Alongside mantra japa, simple dharmic practices support each graha, such as offering water to the Sun at sunrise for Surya, feeding cows or donating white items on Mondays for Chandra, avoiding anger and donating red lentils on Tuesdays for Mangal, respecting elders and feeding the needy on Thursdays for Guru, and lighting a mustard oil diya under a peepal tree on Saturdays for Shani. These remedies are rooted in tradition and faith; they support wellbeing but are not a substitute for medical, legal or financial professional advice where such matters are involved.
Why Navgrah Shanti matters
The Vedic view holds that planetary influence is real but never absolute, it colours circumstances, it does not dictate destiny beyond the reach of sincere effort, devotion and dharmic living. The Navgrah Shanti Mantras exist precisely to offer every devotee, regardless of the specific difficulty they face, a hopeful, accessible way to invoke balance, patience and grace during a challenging planetary period, always with the understanding that self-effort and righteous conduct work hand in hand with mantra sadhana.

FAQ
Common questions
Should I chant the mantra of all nine planets or only the one troubling me?
You may chant only the mantra of the specific graha causing difficulty in your chart, or chant all nine as a complete circuit for general planetary harmony and balance.
How long should a Navgrah Shanti mantra anushthan last?
A common traditional duration is 40 days of daily chanting at the same time, often alongside daan and, if astrologically confirmed, wearing an appropriate gemstone.
Can these mantras replace a proper astrological remedy?
They are a supportive spiritual practice rooted in faith, not a replacement for a personalised consultation with a qualified astrologer, especially for significant chart afflictions.
Is Sade Sati always harmful and does chanting remove it completely?
Sade Sati is a period of Saturn's transit that brings lessons and restructuring, not guaranteed harm. Sincere mantra japa, daan and dharmic conduct are believed to soften its effects and bring growth through the period, not erase it.
