Kaal Bhairav Aarti

Kaal Bhairav, the fierce protector form of Lord Shiva, is worshipped as the Kotwal — the guardian and disciplinarian — of every sacred city, especially Kashi (Varanasi), where no pilgrimage is considered complete without his darshan. He rides a dog (his loyal vahana), carries a trident, a danda (staff) and a bowl, and is invoked by devotees seeking protection from fear, enemies, black magic, evil spirits, sudden misfortune and the fear of untimely death. His aarti is sung with deep reverence, usually in the evening or at night, when his energy is considered most active.

जय काल भैरव देवा, प्रभु जय काल भैरव देवा। भक्तन के दुःख हरता, शिव अंश स्वयं सेवा॥ जय काल भैरव देवा॥

काशी के कोतवाल तुम, नगर नगर के रखवाले। भूत प्रेत भय हरते, दुष्टन के तुम काल॥ जय काल भैरव देवा॥

श्वान वाहन असि त्रिशूल धारी, दण्ड कमंडल हाथ। भक्तन का सदा सहारा, संकट में देते साथ॥ जय काल भैरव देवा॥

काल रूप शिव अवतारी, तीनों लोक में मान्य। जो शरण तुम्हारी आवे, ताको मिटे अज्ञान॥ जय काल भैरव देवा॥

अष्ट भैरव रूप धरे हो, बटुक रूप भी धारा। भोले भक्तन के रक्षक, तुम ही जग के सहारा॥ जय काल भैरव देवा॥

मदिरा भोग तुम्हें प्रिय है, नारियल अरु फल थार। सच्चे मन से जो पूजे, ताको मिले उद्धार॥ जय काल भैरव देवा॥

काल भैरव की आरती, जो कोई नित गावे। सब भय शोक मिटावे, सुख सम्पत्ति पावे॥ जय काल भैरव देवा॥

Victory to Lord Kaal Bhairav, the divine protector; you remove the suffering of your devotees, being a direct expansion of Lord Shiva himself.

You are the Kotwal of Kashi, the guardian of every city and town; you dispel the fear of ghosts and spirits, and you are death itself to the wicked.

Mounted on a dog, bearing sword and trident, holding staff and water-vessel in hand, you are ever the support of your devotees, standing with them in every crisis.

You are Shiva's form as Time itself, honoured in all three worlds; whoever takes your shelter, their ignorance is destroyed.

You bear the eight forms of Bhairav, and also the innocent child-form of Batuk Bhairav; you are the protector of simple, devoted hearts and the support of the entire world.

Offerings of coconut, fruit and other simple items are dear to you; whoever worships you with a sincere heart attains liberation and upliftment.

Whoever sings this aarti of Kaal Bhairav daily, all their fears and sorrows are removed, and they attain happiness and prosperity.

Kaal Bhairav is invoked whenever a devotee feels under attack — from enemies, black magic, sudden fear, legal troubles, or the malefic effects of planets like Rahu, Ketu and Shani. Tradition holds that no injustice can stand before him, and he is especially quick to answer the prayers of those who have been wronged or who fear for their safety. He is also considered the guardian deity who must be worshipped or at least remembered before entering any Shakti Peeth or Jyotirlinga temple, as he stands guard at the gates of sacred power.

The aarti is best performed in the evening, particularly on Sundays and on Kaal Bhairav Ashtami (the eighth day of the dark fortnight of Margashirsha month, his principal festival). Light a mustard-oil lamp before an image or idol of Kaal Bhairav, offer a coconut, black sesame or urad dal, and ring a bell while singing all the verses with full concentration. It is traditional to also chant "Om Kaal Bhairavaya Namah" a few times before beginning. Many devotees keep a small black dog fed on this day as an offering to the Lord's vahana.

Approach Kaal Bhairav with respect and without fear, since he protects those who are sincere and simply hearted. Offer only what tradition prescribes — coconut, til, urad, black cloth — and avoid anything that is not part of genuine devotional practice. Do not perform this worship with any intention to harm another person; Kaal Bhairav's power is for protection and justice, never for causing harm to the innocent. Maintain cleanliness of body and space during worship, and avoid alcohol or non-vegetarian food on the day of a sankalp-based puja unless it is part of a specific temple tradition you are personally guided in.

According to Shaiva tradition, Kaal Bhairav manifested when Lord Shiva took a fierce form to subdue the pride of Brahma, becoming the guardian of dharma and time itself. Ever since, he has been worshipped as the one before whom even Yama, the god of death, bows — hence his name "Kaal" Bhairav, the one who controls time and death. Devotees believe sincere worship of Kaal Bhairav removes the fear of untimely death and grants courage, protection and justice in the face of life's hardest trials.
