Guru Graha Mantra

Guru, or Brihaspati (Jupiter), is regarded in Vedic astrology as the karaka of wisdom, dharma, marriage, children, spiritual growth and prosperity. A strong Guru blesses one with a good spouse, sound judgement and expanding fortune, while a weak or afflicted Guru is often linked with delays in marriage, confusion about life direction, or difficulty finding the right guidance. The Guru mantra is chanted to strengthen these blessings.

बीज मंत्र: ॐ ग्रां ग्रीं ग्रौं सः गुरवे नमः

वैदिक मंत्र: ॐ बृहस्पते अति यदर्यो अर्हाद् द्युमद्विभाति क्रतुमज्जनेषु। यद्दीदयच्छवस ऋतप्रजात तदस्मासु द्रविणं धेहि चित्रम्।।

पौराणिक मंत्र: ॐ देवानां च ऋषीणां च गुरुं काञ्चनसन्निभम्। बुद्धिभूतं त्रिलोकेशं तं नमामि बृहस्पतिम्।।

Gayatri Mantra: ॐ वृषभध्वजाय विद्महे कुण्डलधारिणे धीमहि। तन्नो गुरुः प्रचोदयात्।।

The beej mantra, Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah, invokes Jupiter's seed vibration to remove obstacles related to wisdom, marriage and prosperity.

The Rig Vedic verse to Brihaspati says: O Brihaspati, you shine gloriously beyond what is fitting, radiant among people of wisdom; you who blaze with power born of truth, grant us abundant, wondrous wealth.

The Puranic dhyana mantra salutes Brihaspati as the guru of gods and sages, golden-hued, the embodiment of intellect, the lord of the three worlds — I bow to him.

The Gayatri form prays: we meditate on the one whose banner bears a bull and who wears earrings; may that Guru inspire our understanding.

Best day: Thursday (Guruwar), during Guru's own hora in the morning. Direction: Face north-east, Guru's ruling direction, while chanting. Mala: Use a mala of turmeric beads (haldi mala) or a yellow sandalwood mala; complete 108 repetitions per sitting. Colour: Wear yellow clothing; a topaz (pukhraj) may be considered under expert astrological guidance alongside the mantra practice. Recommended count: 16,000 to 19,000 repetitions over 40 days for a dedicated Guru sadhana, or a simple daily practice of 108 repetitions. Before chanting, offer yellow flowers, chana dal or turmeric to a picture of Guru or a Shaligram, light a ghee lamp, and chant with a calm and respectful heart, ideally after a bath at sunrise.

Supports growth in education, teaching, spiritual pursuits and financial prosperity. Strengthens relationships with elders, teachers and mentors.
