Meaning
The opening shanti mantra prays that we may hear, see and live our full life span auspiciously, with the blessings of Indra, Pusha, Garuda and Brihaspati.
Ganapati is then saluted as the visible truth, the sole doer, sustainer and destroyer of the universe, and finally as none other than Brahman itself, the eternal Self. The seer affirms he speaks only truth and rita (cosmic order), and prays for Ganapati's protection from every direction, for himself, his teacher, his students and all who surround him.
Ganapati is described as consisting of speech, consciousness, bliss and Brahman itself, beyond the three gunas, the three states of waking-dream-sleep, the three bodies and the three times. He resides eternally at the Muladhara chakra and is the embodiment of the threefold shakti. Yogis meditate on him always; he is identified with Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Indra, Agni, Vayu, Surya and Chandra.
The text then explains the mystical construction of the syllable Gam, gives the Ganesha Gayatri ("We know the one-tusked Lord, we meditate on the curved-trunk one, may that tusked deity inspire us"), and describes his form: one tusk, four arms holding a noose, a goad, his broken tusk and a boon-giving gesture, red-hued, large-bellied, fan-eared, adorned in red, worshipped with red flowers and the mouse as his banner — the cause of the universe, compassionate to devotees, imperishable, manifest before creation itself.
The closing portion declares the fruits of recitation: one who studies this Atharvashirsha attains Brahman, is untouched by obstacles, prospers in happiness, and is freed from the five great sins. Reciting it in the evening destroys the sins of the day; in the morning, the sins of the night; and regular recitation morning and evening keeps one sinless and free from obstacles at all times, granting dharma, artha, kama and moksha. Different offerings — durva grass, roasted grain, a thousand modaks, ghee-soaked samidha — are said to bring specific blessings of wealth, fame, wisdom and fulfilment of desires.
