Transliteration
Beej Mantra: Om Som Somaya Namah
Chandra Gayatri: Om Ksheeraputraya Vidmahe, Amritatvaya Dheemahi, Tanno Chandrah Prachodayat
Dhyana Mantra: Om Dadhi Shankha Tushaaraabham Ksheerodaarnava Sambhavam, Namami Shashinam Somam Shambhor Mukuta Bhushanam
Meaning
Beej Mantra: "Om, salutations to Soma (the Moon god)." "Som" is the beej sound of Chandra, representing coolness, nourishment and emotional receptivity.
Chandra Gayatri: "We meditate upon him who was born of the milk ocean, we contemplate the giver of nectar (amrit), may that Moon illuminate and inspire our understanding." This links Chandra to the churning of the milk ocean (Samudra Manthan), from which the Moon emerged along with amrit.
Dhyana Mantra: "I bow to Chandra, who shines like curd, a conch shell or frost, who arose from the ocean of milk, and who adorns Lord Shiva's crown as a jewel." This verse is used for visualising and honouring the Moon god's serene, cooling form.
Significance of Chandra in Jyotish
In Vedic astrology, Chandra (the Moon) governs the mind (manas), emotions, intuition, mother, and overall mental peace. A weak or afflicted Moon in one's birth chart is traditionally associated with anxiety, mood swings, restlessness, poor sleep and emotional instability. Strengthening Chandra through mantra, daan and lifestyle is a classical remedy for calming and stabilising the mind.
Jaap Vidhi (How to Chant)
Chant on Monday, Chandra's own day, ideally in the evening or during moonrise, facing north. Wear white or light-coloured clothing if possible. Use a pearl mala, moonstone mala, or a simple white/crystal (sphatik) mala of 108 beads.
Begin with a sankalp stating your intention — peace of mind, emotional balance, better sleep, or relief from restlessness. Chant "Om Som Somaya Namah" 108 times (one mala), or up to 11 malas for more intensive practice, especially during a Somvati Amavasya or when the Moon is full (Purnima). Offer a diya, white flowers such as jasmine or white lotus, and if possible a little milk or rice kheer as naivedya, since these are dear to Chandra.
Benefits
Regular chanting of the Chandra Mantra is believed to calm an overactive or anxious mind, ease emotional turbulence, mood swings and irritability, improve sleep quality and reduce restlessness, and strengthen intuition, patience and nurturing qualities. It is also traditionally chanted to soothe relationships with the mother or maternal figures, and to ease the effects of an afflicted Moon (Chandra dosha) in one's kundali.
Dos and Don'ts
Avoid chanting in anger or agitation — pause, breathe, and begin calmly. Fasting on Mondays (a simple fruit or milk-based fast) alongside this mantra is traditionally recommended for those seeking relief from Chandra-related distress. Wearing a natural pearl (moti) is sometimes advised for a weak Moon, but only after proper astrological consultation, since gemstone remedies should never be self-prescribed without guidance.
This mantra and its remedies are matters of faith and tradition, and are not a substitute for professional medical or psychological care. If anxiety, depression or emotional distress is severe or persistent, please consult a qualified doctor or mental health professional alongside any spiritual practice.
Mahatmya
Chandra is one of the Navagrahas (nine celestial forces) in Vedic tradition, seated in the Navagraha mandala and worshipped for the tranquillity and emotional depth he governs. Ancient sages considered a well-disposed Chandra essential not just for astrological benefit but for the everyday steadiness of mind needed to walk the spiritual path.
