Balaji Venkateswara Aarti

Lord Venkateswara, lovingly called Balaji, Srinivasa or Govinda, is the presiding deity of the Tirumala hills at Tirupati — the most visited pilgrimage centre in the world. He is worshipped as a complete form of Lord Vishnu, the Preserver of the universe, who descended to Earth in the Kali Yuga to protect his devotees and free them from the burden of debt, sorrow and rebirth. Because Balaji is Vishnu himself, the aarti traditionally sung in his honour is the beloved "Om Jai Jagdish Hare" — a hymn that has crossed every regional boundary in India and is sung with equal devotion in Tirupati's sanctum, in Vaishnav homes, and at temples everywhere Vishnu is worshipped.

ॐ जय जगदीश हरे, स्वामी जय जगदीश हरे। भक्त जनों के संकट, क्षण में दूर करे॥ॐ जय जगदीश हरे॥

जो ध्यावे फल पावे, दुःख बिनसे मन का। सुख सम्पत्ति घर आवे, कष्ट मिटे तन का॥ॐ जय जगदीश हरे॥

O Lord of the universe, O Lord Vishnu, victory to you. In a single moment you remove every distress of your devotees.

Whoever meditates upon you attains fruit — the sorrows of the mind dissolve, happiness and prosperity enter the home, and the pains of the body are erased.

You alone are my mother and father; whose shelter but yours shall I seek? There is none other than you in whom I place my hope.

You are the complete Supreme Soul, the indweller of every heart, the Supreme Brahman, the Lord of all lords.

In whatever home you dwell, every virtue arises there; that home attains every accomplishment and becomes truly blessed.

Balaji is regarded as Kaliyuga Pratyaksha Daivam — the living, visible God of this age — who personally clears the debts, sins and sorrows of anyone who approaches him with sincere faith. Devotees believe that even a single darshan or the singing of his aarti with a true heart can dissolve financial hardship, remove obstacles in marriage and career, and grant the fulfilment of long-held vows (mannat). The temple hundi (offering box) at Tirumala is filled daily by devotees repaying vows made to the Lord, a living tradition of gratitude that has continued for centuries.

The Balaji aarti is ideally sung both morning and evening, especially at sunset when a lamp (deepak) with ghee or til oil is lit before the deity's picture or idol. Devotees stand, ring a small bell if available, and wave the lit lamp in a gentle clockwise circle while singing all the verses with full attention. After the aarti, the lamp is offered (aarti dikhana) to family members and guests, and a small prasad of fruit, tulsi leaves or panchamrit is distributed. Fridays and Saturdays are considered especially auspicious for Vishnu and Balaji worship, as is the entire month of Vaishakh and the annual Brahmotsavam period at Tirupati.

Sit or stand facing the deity with a clean body and mind before beginning the aarti. Keep a tulsi leaf, if possible, as part of the offering, since tulsi is most dear to Vishnu. Avoid singing the aarti in a hurried or distracted manner — devotion, not speed, is what matters. Do not consume onion, garlic or non-vegetarian food on the day you intend to worship Balaji with special sankalp. Never turn your back to the deity while the lamp is still lit; step back respectfully instead.

Puranic tradition holds that Vishnu himself, in the form of Venkateswara, stood atop the seven hills of Tirumala to protect devotees from the hardships of the Kali Yuga, taking upon himself a loan from Kubera, the treasurer of the gods, to fund his marriage to Goddess Padmavati — a debt devotees continue to help repay through their offerings even today. This is why devotees say that whoever sings his praises and offers even a small gift with love is helping to lighten the Lord's own burden, and in turn the Lord lightens theirs.
