Shri Ramanathaswamy Jyotirlinga stands on the sacred island of Rameshwaram, at the very edge of Bharat where Ram built the setu to Lanka. Its story is a story of paap-mukti: after slaying Ravana, a learned Brahmin, Bhagwan Ram is held to have installed and worshipped a Shivling here to be freed of the paap of that great war. When Hanuman, sent to fetch a linga from Kailash, was delayed, Sita is said to have shaped one from the sand of the shore — the Ramalinga that Ram worshipped at the appointed muhurta. Maha Shivratri, the Phalguna Krishna Chaturdashi, is the greatest of all Shiva nights, held to wash even the heaviest paap for the sincere and repentant heart. On this night a Rudrabhishek and sankalp are offered in your naam-gotra so that the burden of an old wrong is released, your slate is wiped clean, a clean conscience returns, and peace of mind is found. This is offered as faith and tradition for inner peace; it does not undo the consequences of a wrong, and does not replace making amends or seeking any help you may need.
The Maha Shivratri paap-mukti Rudrabhishek is carried at Shri Ramanathaswamy Jyotirlinga, Rameshwaram, in your naam-gotra, on the great night, with setu jal, bilva patta and chandan before Ramanathaswamy Mahadev.
Devotees want the abhishek carried with care and reverence, a clear ritual, a clear video, and a clear naam-gotra spoken before Ramanathaswamy Mahadev at Rameshwaram.
