The Story (Vrat Katha) King Priyavrat and Queen Malini were very sad because they had no children. Maharishi Kashyap performed a Yagya for them, and the Queen conceived. However, the son born was stillborn (dead).
Heartbroken, the King went to the cremation ground and decided to end his own life. Suddenly, a Goddess descended from the sky in a celestial chariot. She said, “I am Shashti Devi (Chhathi Maiya), the daughter of Brahma. I protect all children and grant offspring to the childless.”
She asked the King to worship her. The King returned and performed the Chhath Vrat with strict purity on the sixth day of the Kartik month. As a result, he was blessed with a healthy and beautiful son.
Conclusion Since then, Chhath Puja has been celebrated to thank the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya for the gift of life and health.
