Gaya is where Pitru Paksha tarpan and pind daan are performed by families from every part of the country. Devotees take these sevas when a departed elder has been seen in dreams, when a family line feels stalled, or simply because the shraddh tithi has come and travel is not possible.

Yes. Tarpan offered by a representative on behalf of the family is long-established practice — what matters is that the sankalp names the correct person and gotra and that the rite is performed at the Gaya kshetra on the correct tithi. The acharya speaks your naam-gotra aloud, and the recording is sent to you.
