About the Sabha Parva
Yudhishthira performs the Rajasuya sacrifice and a great assembly hall is built; Jarasandha and Shishupala are slain. Then comes the fateful game of dice, in which Yudhishthira loses his kingdom, his brothers, himself and Draupadi, her disrobing in the court, and the sentence of thirteen years’ exile upon the Pandavas.
How it is read
The Sabha Parva is given below in its original Sanskrit (Devanagari), numbered by chapter (adhyaya) and shloka. Read verse by verse; the Mahabharata is traditionally heard as itihasa-shravana, for dharma and discernment.

[व] ततॊ ऽबरवीन मयः पार्थं वासुदेवस्य संनिधौ पराञ्जलिः शलक्ष्णया वाचा पूजयित्वा पुनः पुनः
Vaishampayana said: Then Maya, in the presence of Vasudeva, spoke to Partha with joined palms, honoring him again and again with gentle words.
अस्माच च कृष्णात संक्रुद्धात पावकाच च दिधक्षतः तवया तरातॊ ऽसमि कौन्तेय बरूहि किं करवाणि ते
Maya said: I was about to be burned by the wrathful Krishna and the raging fire, but you saved me, O son of Kunti; tell me what I may do for you.
[आर्ज] कृतम एव तवया सर्वं सवस्ति गच्छ महासुर परीतिमान भव मे नित्यं परीतिमन्तॊ वयं च ते
Arjuna said: You have already done enough; go in peace, great Asura. Be ever well-disposed to me, as we are to you.
[मय] युक्तम एतत तवयि विभॊ यथात्थ पुरुषर्षभ परीतिपूर्वम अहं किं चित कर्तुम इच्छामि भारत
Maya said: That is fitting of you, O mighty lord, as you say; yet, O Bharata, I wish to do something for you out of affection.
अहं हि विश्वकर्मा वै दानवानां महाकविः सॊ ऽहं वै तवत्कृते किं चित कर्तुम इच्छामि पाण्डव
I am Vishvakarma, the great craftsman of the Danavas; O Pandava, I wish to do something in return for you.
[अर] पराणकृच्छ्राद विमुक्तं तवम आत्मानं मन्यसे मया एवंगते न शक्ष्यामि किं चित कारयितुं तवया
Arjuna said: You consider yourself freed from mortal danger through me; if that is so, I cannot ask anything to be done by you.
न चापि तव संकल्पं मॊघम इच्छामि दानव कृष्णस्य करियतां किं चित तथा परतिकृतं मयि
Yet, O Danava, I do not wish your resolve to go in vain; do something for Krishna as a return in my stead.
[व] चॊदितॊ वासुदेवस तु मयेन भरतर्षभ मुहूर्तम इव संदध्यौ किम अयं चॊद्यताम इति
Vaishampayana said: Thus urged by Maya, O bull of the Bharatas, Vasudeva pondered a moment as to what should be asked of him.
चॊदयाम आस तं कृष्णः सभा वै करियताम इति धर्मराजस्य दैतेय यादृशीम इह मन्यसे
Krishna then urged him: Let an assembly hall be built, O son of Diti, such as you deem fit for Dharmaraja.
यां कृतां नानुकुर्युस ते मानवाः परेक्ष्य विस्मिताः मनुष्यलॊके कृत्स्ने ऽसमिंस तादृशीं कुरु वै सभाम
Build such an assembly hall in the whole world of men that no man, however hard he tries, can ever imitate it, so that people gaze upon it in astonishment.
यत्र दिव्यान अभिप्रायान पश्येम विहितांस तवया आसुरान मानुषांश चैव तां सभां कुरु वै मय
Build for Maya's sake an assembly hall in which we may behold divine designs fashioned by you, belonging both to Asuras and to men.
परतिगृह्य तु तद वाक्यं संप्रहृष्टॊ मयस तदा विमानप्रतिमां चक्रे पाण्डवस्य सभां मुदा
Accepting these words, Maya was greatly delighted and joyfully fashioned for the Pandava an assembly hall resembling a celestial chariot.
ततः कृष्णश च पार्थश च धर्मराजे युधिष्ठिरे सर्वम एतद यथावेद्य दर्शयाम आसतुर मयम
Then Krishna and Partha showed all this in full detail to Dharmaraja Yudhishthira, and presented Maya to him.
तस्मै युधिष्ठिरः पूजां यथार्हम अकरॊत तदा स तु तां परतिजग्राह मयः सत्कृत्य सत्कृतः
Yudhishthira honored him then as was fitting, and Maya, thus honored, accepted that honor with respect.
स पूर्वदेव चरितं तत्र तत्र विशां पते कथयाम आस दैतेयः पाण्डुपुत्रेषु भारत
O lord of the people, that Daitya then recounted, here and there, the deeds of the ancient gods to the sons of Pandu, O Bharata.
स कालं कं चिद आश्वस्य विश्वकर्मा परचिन्त्य च सभां परचक्रमे कर्तुं पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम
After resting a while, Vishvakarma Maya, having reflected, set about building the assembly hall for the great-souled Pandavas.
अभिप्रायेण पार्थानां कृष्णस्य च महात्मनः पुण्ये ऽहनि महातेजाः कृतकौतुक मङ्गलः
According to the wish of the Parthas and the great-souled Krishna, that mighty-splendored one, on an auspicious day and with festive rites performed,
तर्पयित्वा दविजश्रेष्ठान पायसेन सहस्रशः धनं बहुविधं दत्त्वा तेभ्य एव च वीर्यवान
having satisfied the foremost of the twice-born with thousands of measures of rice-pudding, the mighty one gave them abundant wealth of various kinds.
सर्वर्तुगुणसंपन्नां दिव्यरूपां मनॊरमाम दश किष्कु सहस्रां तां मापयाम आस सर्वतः
He then measured out on all sides a delightful, divinely-shaped area, ten thousand cubits, endowed with the qualities of every season.
[व] उषित्वा खाण्डव परस्थे सुखवासं जनार्दनः पार्थैः परीतिसमायुक्तैः पूजनार्हॊ ऽभिपूजितः
Vaishampayana said: Having dwelt happily at Khandavaprastha and been honored by the affectionate Parthas as he deserved, Janardana
गमनाय मतिं चक्रे पितुर दर्शनलालसः धर्मराजम अथामन्त्र्य पृथां च पृथुलॊचनः
resolved to depart, longing to see his father; the wide-eyed Krishna took leave of Dharmaraja and of Pritha.
ववन्दे चरणौ मूर्ध्ना जगद वन्द्यः पितृस्वसुः स तया मूर्ध्न्य उपाघ्रातः परिष्वक्तश च केशवः
He, whom the whole world reveres, bowed his head at the feet of his father's sister; and Keshava was, in turn, smelled on the head and embraced by her.
ददर्शानन्तरं कृष्णॊ भगिनीं सवां महायशाः ताम उपेत्य हृषीकेशः परीत्या बाष्पसमन्वितः
Then the greatly renowned Krishna saw his own sister; going up to her, Hrishikesha, filled with affection, was moved to tears.
अर्थ्यं तथ्यं हितं वाक्यं लघु युक्तम अनुत्तमम उवाच भगवान भद्रां सुभद्रां भद्र भाषिणीम
The blessed Lord spoke to auspicious, well-speaking Subhadra words that were meaningful, true, beneficial, brief, fitting, and excellent.
तया सवजनगामीनि शरावितॊ वचनानि सः संपूजितश चाप्य असकृच छिरसा चाभिवादितः
She had messages from her own kinsfolk conveyed to him, and he was honored again and again and greeted with a bowed head.
ताम अनुज्ञाप्य वार्ष्णेयः परतिनन्द्य च भामिनीम ददर्शानन्तरं कृष्णां दौम्यं चापि जनार्दनः
Taking leave of that gracious lady and comforting her, the Vrishni chief, Janardana, next saw Krishna (Draupadi) and Dhaumya.
ववन्दे च यथान्यायं धौम्यं पुरुषसत्तमः दरौपदीं सान्त्वयित्वा च आमन्त्र्य च जनार्दनः
That best of men bowed to Dhaumya duly; then, having comforted Draupadi and taken leave, Janardana
भरातॄन अभ्यगमद धीमान पार्थेन सहितॊ बली भरातृभिः पञ्चभिः कृष्णॊ वृतः शक्र इवामरैः
the wise and mighty Krishna, along with Partha, went to his brothers, surrounded by the five brothers as Indra is by the immortals.
अर्चयाम आस देवांश च दविजांश च यदुपुंगवः माल्यजप्य नमः कारैर गन्धैर उच्चावचैर अपि स कृत्वा सर्वकार्याणि परतस्थे तस्थुषां वरः
The best of the Yadus worshipped the gods and the twice-born with garlands, muttered prayers, salutations, and varied fragrant offerings, and, having performed all rites, that best of standing beings set forth.
सवस्ति वाच्यार्हतॊ विप्रान दधि पात्रफलाक्षतैः वसु परदाय च ततः परदक्षिणम अवर्तत
Having caused deserving Brahmins to be blessed with dahi, vessels, fruits, and unbroken rice, and having given them wealth, he then walked around in reverence.
काञ्चनं रथम आस्थाय तार्क्ष्य केतनम आशुगम गदा चक्रासिशार्ङ्गाद्यैर आयुधैश च समन्वितम
Mounting a golden chariot bearing the eagle banner, swift as thought and fitted with mace, discus, sword, and bow among other weapons,
तिथाव अथ च नक्षत्रे मुहूर्ते च गुणान्विते परययौ पुण्डरीकाक्षः सैन्यसुग्रीव वाहनः
on an auspicious lunar day, constellation, and hour, the lotus-eyed one set forth, drawn by his horses Saingya and Sugriva.
अन्वारुरॊह चाप्य एनं परेम्णा राजा युधिष्ठिरः अपास्य चास्य यन्तारं दारुकं यन्तृसत्तमम अभीषून संप्रजग्राह सवयं कुरुपतिस तदा
King Yudhishthira, out of love, mounted the chariot with him, and setting aside Daruka, the best of charioteers, the lord of the Kurus himself took up the reins.
उपारुह्यार्जुनश चापि चामरव्यजनं सितम रुक्मदण्डं बृहन मूर्ध्नि दुधावाभिप्रदक्षिणम
Arjuna too mounted and, standing behind, waved over Krishna's head a white, gold-handled chowrie in reverent circumambulation.
तथैव भीमसेनॊ ऽपि यमाभ्यां सहितॊ वशी पृष्ठतॊ ऽनुययौ कृष्णम ऋत्विक पौरजनैर वृतः
Likewise the self-controlled Bhimasena, together with the twins, followed behind Krishna, surrounded by priests and townsfolk.
स तथा भरातृभिः सार्धं केशवः परवीरहा अनुगम्यमानः शुशुभे शिष्यैर इव गुरुः परियैः
Thus followed by his brothers, Keshava, the slayer of great heroes, shone splendid as a teacher followed by his beloved pupils.
पार्थम आमन्त्र्य गॊविन्दः परिष्वज्य च पीडितम युधिष्ठिरं पूजयित्वा भीमसेनं यमौ तथा
Govinda took leave of Partha, embraced him firmly, and honored Yudhishthira, Bhimasena, and the twins.
परिष्वक्तॊ भृशं ताभ्यां यमाभ्याम अभिवादितः ततस तैः संविदं कृत्वा यथावन मधुसूदनः
He was warmly embraced by the twins and greeted; then, taking due leave of them all, Madhusudana departed.
निवर्तयित्वा च तदा पाण्डवान सपदानुगान सवां पुरीं परययौ कृष्णः पुरंदर इवापरः
Having sent back the Pandavas and their retinue who had accompanied him partway, Krishna proceeded to his own city, like another Purandara (Indra).
लॊचनैर अनुजग्मुस ते तम आदृष्टि पथात तदा मनॊभिर अनुजग्मुस ते कृष्णं परीतिसमन्वयात
They followed him with their eyes as far as sight could reach, and followed Krishna in their hearts too, out of affection.
अतृप्त मनसाम एव तेषां केशव दर्शने कषिप्रम अन्तर्दधे शौरिश चक्षुषां परियदर्शनः
While their minds were still unsated with the sight of Keshava, the pleasant-eyed Shauri quickly vanished from view.
अकामा इव पार्थास ते गॊविन्द गतमानसाः निवृत्यॊपययुः सर्वे सवपुरं पुरुषर्षभाः सयन्दनेनाथ कृष्णॊ ऽपि समये दवारकाम अगात
Their hearts gone with Govinda, the reluctant Parthas, best among men, all turned back and returned to their own city, while Krishna in due time reached Dwaraka by chariot.
[व] अथाब्रवीन मयः पार्थम अर्जुनं जयतां वरम आपृच्छे तवां गमिष्यामि कषिप्रम एष्यामि चाप्य अहम
Vaishampayana said: Then Maya said to Arjuna, foremost among conquerors: I take my leave; I shall go and return quickly.
उत्तरेण तु कैलासं मैनाकं पर्वतं परति यक्ष्यमाणेषु सर्वेषु दानवेषु तदा मया कृतं मणिमयं भाण्डं रम्यं बिन्दुसरः परति
When all the Danavas gathered north of Kailasa near Mount Mainaka to perform sacrifice at the beautiful jeweled vessel by Lake Bindusaras that I had made,
सभायां सत्यसंधस्य यद आसीद वृषपर्वणः आगमिष्यामि तद्गृह्य यदि तिष्ठति भारत
O Bharata, I shall go and fetch what was in the assembly hall of the truth-keeping Vrishaparvan, if it still remains there.
ततः सभां करिष्यामि पाण्डवाय यशॊ विने मनः परह्लादिनीं चित्रां सर्वरत्र विभूषिताम
Then I shall build for the Pandava an assembly hall bringing fame, delightful to the mind, wondrous, and adorned with every kind of gem.
अस्ति बिन्दुसरस्य एव गदा शरेष्ठा कुरूद्वह निहिता यौवनाश्वेन राज्ञा हत्वा रणे रिपून सुवर्णबिन्दुभिश चित्रा गुर्वी भारसहा दृढा
O upholder of the Kurus, there is at Bindusaras a supreme mace kept by King Yauvanashva, gained by slaying enemies in battle, wondrous with golden dots, heavy and firm, able to bear great weight.
सा वै शतसहस्रस्य संमिता सर्वघातिनी अनुरूपा च भीमस्य गाण्डीवं भवतॊ यथा
That mace equals a hundred thousand others in destructive power and befits Bhima just as the Gandiva befits you.
वारुणश च महाशङ्खॊ देवदत्तः सुघॊषवान सर्वम एतत परदास्यामि भवते नात्र संशयः इत्य उक्त्वा सॊ ऽसुरः पार्थं पराग उदीचीम अगाद दिशम
There is also Varuna's great, sweet-sounding conch called Devadatta; I shall give all this to you, without doubt. So saying, the Asura went first eastward and then toward the north.
उत्तरेण तु कैलासं मैनाकं पर्वतं परति हिरण्यशृङ्गॊ भगवान महामणिमयॊ गिरिः
North of Kailasa, toward Mount Mainaka, stands the blessed, gem-studded mountain Hiranyashringa.
रम्यं बिन्दुसरॊ नाम यत्र राजा भगीरथः दृष्ट्वा भागीरथीं गङ्गाम उवास बहुलाः समाः
There lies the delightful lake called Bindusaras, where King Bhagiratha, having beheld the Ganges (Bhagirathi), dwelt for many years.
यत्रेष्ट्वा सर्वभूतानाम ईश्वरेण महात्मना आहृताः करतवॊ मुख्याः शतं भरतसत्तम
There, O best of Bharatas, the great-souled Lord of all beings performed the foremost hundred sacrifices, from which offerings were brought.
यत्र यूपा मणिमयाश चित्याश चापि हिरन मयाः शॊभार्थं विहितास तत्र न तु दृष्टान्ततः कृताः
There, sacrificial posts and altars made of gems and gold were set up for beauty, not because they were needed as examples.
यत्रेष्ट्वा स गतः सिद्धिं सहस्राक्षः शचीपतिः यत्र भूतपतिः सृष्ट्वा सर्वलॊकान सनातनः उपास्यते तिग्मतेजा वृतॊ भूतैः सहस्रशः
There, having performed sacrifice, the thousand-eyed lord of Shachi attained success; and there the eternal Lord of beings, having created all worlds, the fiery one, is worshipped, surrounded by thousands of beings.
नरनारायणौ बरह्मा यमः सथाणुश च पञ्चमः उपासते यत्र सत्रं सहस्रयुगपर्यये
Nara-Narayana, Brahma, Yama, and Sthanu as the fifth attend there upon the sacrificial session that lasts through the passing of a thousand yugas.
यत्रेष्टं वासुदेवेन सर्वैर वर्षसहस्रकैः शरद्दधानेन सततं शिष्टसंप्रतिपत्तये
There, with faith, Vasudeva has offered sacrifice every thousand years continually, for the sake of upholding righteous conduct.
सुवर्णमालिनॊ यूपाश चित्याश चाप्य अति भास्वराः ददौ यत्र सहस्राणि परयुतानि च केशवः
There stand golden-garlanded, brilliant sacrificial posts and altars, where Keshava gave away many thousands and hundred-thousands of gifts.
तत्र गत्वा स जग्राह गदां शङ्खं च भारत सफाटिकं च सभा दरव्यं यद आसीद वृषपर्वणः किंकरैः सह रक्षॊभिर अगृह्णात सर्वम एव तत
Going there, O Bharata, he took the mace and the conch, and all the crystal furnishings that had belonged to the assembly hall of Vrishaparvan, seizing everything along with the guardian Kinkara demons.
तद आहृत्य तु तां चक्रे सॊ ऽसुरॊ ऽपरतिमां सभाम विश्रुतां तरिषु लॊकेषु दिव्यां मणिमयीं शुभाम
Bringing these back, that Asura fashioned an unrivaled, divine, gem-studded, beautiful assembly hall renowned throughout the three worlds.
गदां च भीमसेनाय परवरां परददौ तदा देवदत्तं च पार्थाय ददौ शङ्खम अनुत्तमम
He then gave the excellent mace to Bhimasena, and gave the peerless conch Devadatta to Partha.
सभा तु सा महाराज शातकुम्भमय दरुमा दश किष्कु सहस्राणि समन्ताद आयताभवत
O great king, that assembly hall, gleaming with golden pillars, extended ten thousand cubits on every side.
यथा वह्नेर यथार्कस्य सॊमस्य च यथैव सा भराजमाना तथा दिव्या बभार परमं वपुः
Shining like fire, like the sun, and like the moon, that divine hall bore a supremely radiant form.
परतिघ्नतीव परभया परभाम अर्कस्य भास्वराम परबभौ जवलमानेव दिव्या दिव्येन वर्चसा
Reflecting back the sun's radiance with its own splendor, it shone as though ablaze with divine luster.
नगमेघप्रतीकाशा दिवम आवृत्य विष्ठिता आयता विपुला शलक्ष्णा विपाप्मा विगतक्लमा
Resembling a cloud-like mountain, it stood covering the sky, vast, broad, smooth, free of any flaw, and untiring.
उत्तमद्रव्यसंपन्ना मणिप्राकारमालिनी बहुरत्ना बहुधना सुकृता विश्वकर्मणा
Filled with the finest materials, garlanded with jeweled ramparts, rich in gems and wealth, it was skillfully wrought by Vishvakarma.
न दाशार्ही सुधर्मा वा बरह्मणॊ वापि तादृशी आसीद रूपेण संपन्ना यां चक्रे ऽपरतिमां मयः
Not even Sudharma, the assembly hall of the Dasharhas, nor even that of Brahma, was so perfect in beauty as this incomparable hall which Maya made.
तां सम तत्र मयेनॊक्ता रक्षन्ति च वहन्ति च सभाम अष्टौ सहस्राणि किंकरा नाम राक्षसाः
That hall, as instructed by Maya, was guarded and borne up by eight thousand Rakshasas called Kinkaras.
अन्तरिक्षचरा घॊरा महाकाया महाबलाः रक्ताक्षाः पिङ्गलाक्षाश च शुक्तिकर्णाः परहारिणः
They were terrible sky-roaming beings of huge form and great strength, red-eyed and tawny-eyed, with ears like shells, ever ready to strike.
तस्यां सभायां नलिनीं चकाराप्रतिमां मयः वैडूर्य पत्रविततां मणिनाल मयाम्बुजाम
In that hall, Maya also fashioned a peerless lotus-pond, with beryl leaves, jeweled stalks, and gem-made lotuses.
पद्मसौगन्धिक वतीं नानाद्विज गणायुताम पुष्पितैः पङ्कजैश चित्रां कूर्ममत्स्यैश च शॊभिताम
Fragrant with lotuses, thronged with countless varieties of birds, adorned with blossoming lotuses and beautified by tortoises and fish.
सूपतीर्थाम अकलुषां सर्वर्तुसलिलां शुभाम मारुतेनैव चॊद्धूतैर मुक्ता बिन्दुभिर आचिताम
With fine bathing-steps, spotless and clear, filled with waters of every season, it was beautiful, dotted with pearls scattered by the wind.
मणिरत्नचितां तां तु के चिद अभ्येत्य पार्थिवाः दृष्ट्वापि नाभ्यजानन्त ते ऽजञानात परपतन्त्य उत
Some kings, coming near that gem-inlaid pond, could not recognize it even upon seeing it, and out of ignorance fell into it.
तां सभाम अभितॊ नित्यं पुष्पवन्तॊ महाद्रुमाः आसन नानाविधा नीलाः शीतच छाया मनॊरमाः
All around that hall, forever flowering, ever green, cool-shaded, delightful, great trees of many kinds stood.
काननानि सुगन्धीनि पुष्करिण्यश च सर्वशः हंसकारण्डव युताश चक्रवाकॊपशॊभिताः
Fragrant groves and lotus-ponds everywhere were filled with swans and Karandavas and beautified by Chakravaka birds.
जलजानां च माल्यानां सथलजानां च सर्वशः मारुतॊ गन्धम आदाय पाण्डवान सम निषेवते
Carrying the fragrance of aquatic and terrestrial garlands of all kinds, the breeze served the Pandavas everywhere.
ईदृशीं तां सभां कृत्वा मासैः परि चतुर्दशैः निष्ठितां धर्मराजाय मयॊ राज्ञे नयवेदयत
Having thus built that assembly hall in fourteen months, Maya, having completed it, informed King Dharmaraja.
[व] ततः परवेशनं चक्रे तस्यां राजा युधिष्ठिरः अयुतं भॊजयाम आस बराह्मणानां नराधिपः
Vaishampayana said: Then King Yudhishthira held the entering ceremony for it, and the ruler fed ten thousand Brahmins.
घृतपायसेन मधुना भक्ष्यैर मूलफलैस तथा अहतैश चैव वासॊभिर माल्यैर उच्चावचैर अपि
With ghee-rice-pudding, honey, sweets, roots and fruits, together with unworn garments and varied garlands,
ददौ तेभ्यः सहस्राणि गवां परत्येकशः परभुः पुण्याहघॊषस तत्रासीद दिवस्पृग इव भारत
the lord gave each of them thousands of cows; the sound of auspicious blessings rose there as if touching the sky, O Bharata.
वादित्रैर विविधैर गीतैर गन्धैर उच्चावचैर अपि पूजयित्वा कुरुश्रेष्ठॊ दैवतानि निवेश्य च
With various musical instruments, songs, and manifold fragrances, that best of Kurus, having worshipped and installed the deities, honored the hall.
तत्र मल्ला नटा झल्लाः सूता वैतालिकास तथा उपतस्थुर महात्मानं सप्तरात्रं युधिष्ठिरम
There, wrestlers, dancers, jugglers, bards and court-singers waited upon the great-souled Yudhishthira for seven nights.
तथा स कृत्वा पूजां तां भरातृभिः सह पाण्डवः तस्यां सभायां रम्यायां रेमे शक्रॊ यथा दिवि
Having thus received such honor along with his brothers, the Pandava rejoiced in that beautiful assembly hall just as Indra rejoices in heaven.
सभायाम ऋषयस तस्यां पाण्डवैः सह आसते आसां चक्रुर नरेन्द्राश च नानादेशसमागताः
In that assembly, sages sat together with the Pandavas, and kings who had gathered there from many lands paid them homage.
असितॊ देवलः सत्यः सर्पमाली महाशिराः अर्वावसुः सुमित्रश च मैत्रेयः शुनकॊ बलिः
Present there were Asita Devala, Satya, Sarpamali, Mahashira, Arvavasu, Sumitra, Maitreya, Shunaka and Bali.
बकॊ दाल्भ्यः सथूलशिराः कृष्णद्वैपायनः शुकः सुमन्तुर जैमिनिः पैलॊ वयास शिष्यास तथा वयम
