Traditional, dharmic remedies to strengthen a weak Surya (Sun) for confidence, leadership, father's blessings, health and government job success.
Surya, the Sun, is the king among the nine planets (Navagraha) in Vedic astrology and is regarded as the atmakaraka - the significator of the soul itself. Surya governs confidence, self-respect, willpower, authority, government connections, father, bones, eyes, heart and overall vitality. A strong Surya in the birth chart gives a person natural leadership qualities, good health, respect in society and success in government-related work or positions of authority.
When Surya is weak, debilitated (in Tula/Libra), combust, or afflicted by malefic planets like Rahu, Ketu or Saturn, a person may experience low self-confidence, strained relationship with father or father figures, difficulty gaining respect at work, health issues related to the heart, bones, eyes or blood pressure, and repeated obstacles in government jobs, promotions or dealing with authority figures.
Surya upay are among the oldest and most well-documented in Sanatan Dharma, centred around the simple but profound practice of offering Arghya (water) to the rising Sun each morning.
Who should consider Surya upay
These remedies particularly help those in government service, administration, politics, medicine or any leadership role; students appearing for competitive government exams; people with strained relationships with their father; and anyone going through Surya Mahadasha or Antardasha, or whose chart shows Surya weak, debilitated or heavily afflicted.
Surya Arghya - The Foundational Upay
Every morning, ideally at sunrise, stand facing east, take a copper vessel (tamba lota) filled with clean water, add a little raw rice, red flowers (like red hibiscus) and a few grains of red sandalwood or roli if available, and offer this water to the rising Sun in a thin, steady stream while chanting the Surya mantra. This single daily practice, sustained over weeks, is considered one of the most powerful remedies in all of Vedic tradition - simple, freely available to everyone, and deeply purifying.
While offering Arghya, chant: ओम् सूर्याय नमः or the longer Gayatri: ओम् आदित्याय विद्महे मार्तण्डाय धीमहि तन्नो सूर्यः प्रचोदयात्
Surya Beej Mantra
ओम् ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रौं सः सूर्याय नमः
This beej mantra can be chanted 108 times using a ruby (manik) mala if you own one appropriately, or a rudraksha or tulsi mala, seated facing east, ideally at sunrise on Sunday (Ravivar).
Aditya Hridaya Stotra
For those wanting a deeper daily or weekly practice, reciting the Aditya Hridaya Stotra - the hymn Sage Agastya gave to Lord Rama before his battle with Ravana - is considered exceptionally powerful for strengthening Surya, building confidence and courage, and removing obstacles. It can be recited on Sundays or daily at sunrise, alongside or after the Arghya.
Sunday (Ravivar) Vidhi
On Sunday, wake before or at sunrise, bathe, wear red, orange or saffron-coloured clothes, and offer Arghya as described above. Light a diya with ghee before an image of Surya or Lord Vishnu (as Surya is considered an aspect of Vishnu in some traditions), offer red flowers, and chant either the beej mantra or the Aditya Hridaya Stotra. Many devotees also recite the Surya Chalisa on this day.
Daan (Charitable Donation)
On Sundays, donate:
Wheat, jaggery (gud) or red lentils Copper items or copper vessels Red clothes Ruby, or red-coloured items, to a temple or to the needy Food to the poor, especially in the early morning
Donating wheat and jaggery on Sunday is one of the most traditional and widely practised Surya remedies across India.
Respect for Father and Elders
Because Surya represents the father in astrology, one of the most powerful non-ritual upay is to genuinely honour, serve and seek the blessings of your father or father-figures in your life. Touching their feet, seeking their guidance, and resolving any estrangement is considered to please Surya directly - often more effectively than any external ritual.
Gemstone (with caution)
Ruby (Manik) is the traditional gemstone associated with Surya. As with all gemstones, it should only be worn after proper consultation with a qualified astrologer, since an unsuitable stone can aggravate rather than help the areas Surya governs, including heart and blood-pressure related health.
Lifestyle Practices That Please Surya
Wake up early and greet the sunrise whenever possible - this alone is considered deeply Surya-strengthening. Maintain good posture, physical discipline and a strong daily routine, since Surya favours discipline and vitality. Be honest and straightforward in your dealings; Surya dislikes deceit and indirect behaviour. Practise Surya Namaskar (sun salutations) as part of your yoga routine. Avoid excessive ego or arrogance even while building confidence - Surya blesses dignified strength, not vanity.
Fasting (Vrat)
Some devotees observe a Sunday vrat, eating only once a day, avoiding salt in that one meal (a traditional practice for Surya vrat), and spending the day in mantra jaap and reflection. This is optional and should be adapted for anyone with health conditions such as diabetes or low blood pressure - please consult a doctor before undertaking any fast.
A Gentle Reminder
These are time-honoured, faith-based practices meant to bring clarity, confidence and steadiness to your spiritual and inner life. They are not a substitute for medical treatment of heart, bone, eye or blood-pressure conditions, nor for the professional preparation needed for competitive exams or career advancement. Please continue medical care and diligent effort alongside these remedies - upay works best as a companion to sincere action, not a replacement for it.
With regular Surya Arghya and mantra practice, most devotees notice a gradual rise in confidence, clearer sense of purpose, and improved relationships with authority figures and father over a few weeks to months. The Sun rewards discipline and consistency above all else.

FAQ
Common questions
What is the correct way to offer Surya Arghya?
Stand facing east at sunrise with a copper vessel of water mixed with a little raw rice and red flowers, and pour it in a thin, steady stream toward the sun while chanting the Surya mantra, allowing the sunlight to pass through the falling water. Avoid looking directly at the sun.
Can Surya upay help specifically with government job success?
Yes, since Surya governs authority, government connections and leadership, strengthening Surya through Arghya, mantra and daan is traditionally believed to support success in government jobs, promotions and dealings with authority figures, alongside diligent preparation and effort.
Is it necessary to fast on Sundays for Surya upay to work?
No, fasting is optional. The Surya Arghya, mantra jaap and daan are the core, most powerful remedies. Anyone with health conditions like diabetes should skip fasting and rely on the other practices.
Can I wear Ruby (Manik) without astrological consultation?
It is best not to. Ruby is a strong gemstone and should only be worn after a qualified astrologer examines your full birth chart, since an unsuitable stone can aggravate health or ego-related issues.
