About the Udyoga Parva
The run-up to war — both sides gather allies, and Krishna goes to Hastinapura as the Pandavas’ peace-envoy. Duryodhana refuses them even five villages; Krishna reveals his cosmic form; and Kunti meets Karna. War becomes inevitable.
How it is read
The Udyoga Parva is given below in its original Sanskrit (Devanagari), numbered by chapter (adhyaya) and shloka. Read verse by verse; the Mahabharata is traditionally heard as itihasa-shravana, for dharma and discernment.

[Vaisampayana speaks:] After celebrating Abhimanyu's wedding, the joyful Kuru heroes rested for four days and then, cheerfully, went to Virata's assembly hall.

सर्वे च शूराः पितृभिः समाना; वीर्येण रूपेण बलेन चैव उपाविशन दरौपदेयाः कुमाराः; सुवर्णचित्रेषु वरासनेषु

Hearing Krishna's speech — righteous, meaningful, sweet and impartial — his elder brother Balarama, honoring it greatly, then took up the discussion, O king.

Also to be summoned were all the other sons of Dhritarashtra, mighty and learned in the scriptures, established each in their own duties, world-renowned heroes and elders learned in tradition.

FAQ
Common questions
What is the Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata about?
The run-up to war — both sides gather allies, and Krishna goes to Hastinapura as the Pandavas’ peace-envoy. Duryodhana refuses them even five villages; Krishna reveals his cosmic form; and Kunti meets Karna. War becomes inevitable.
What is the Mahabharata?
The Mahabharata is the great Sanskrit itihasa (epic) composed by Maharishi Vyasa, telling of the Kuru dynasty and the war between the Pandavas and the Kauravas at Kurukshetra. In its eighteen parvas (books) it contains the Bhagavad Gita, the Vishnu Sahasranama and a vast treasury of dharma, and is revered as the fifth Veda.
