Yudhishthira’s final test and ascent — his refusal to abandon the faithful dog (Dharma in disguise), his brief vision of hell and of heaven, and the reunion of all in the celestial world, closing the great epic.

[ज] सवर्गं तरिविष्टपं पराप्य मम पूर्वपितामहाः पाण्डवा धार्तराष्ट्राश च कानि सथानानि भेजिरे
[Janamejaya] Having reached heaven, the abode of the immortals, what stations did my forefathers, the Pandavas and the sons of Dhritarashtra, come to occupy?
एतद इच्छाम्य अहं शरॊतुं सर्वविच चासि मे मतः महर्षिणाभ्यनुज्ञातॊ वयासेनाद्भुत कर्मणा
I wish to hear this, for I consider you all-knowing, having been permitted by the great sage Vyasa of wondrous deeds.
[वै] सवर्गं तरिविष्टपं पराप्य तव पूर्वपितामहाः युधिष्ठिरप्रभृतयॊ यद अकुर्वत तच छृणु
[Vaishampayana] Hear now what Yudhishthira and the others did after reaching heaven, the abode of the immortals, O your ancestors.
सवर्गं तरिविष्टपं पराप्य धर्मराजॊ युधिष्ठिरः दुर्यॊधनं शरिया जुष्टं ददर्शासीनम आसने
Having reached heaven, King Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, saw Duryodhana seated on a throne, adorned with splendor.
भराजमानाम इवादित्यं वीर लक्ष्म्याभिसंवृतम देवैर भराजिष्णुभिः साध्यैः सहितं पुण्यकर्मभिः
Duryodhana shone like the sun, wrapped in heroic glory, surrounded by radiant gods, the Sadhyas, and doers of holy deeds.
ततॊ युधिष्ठिरॊ दृष्ट्व दुर्यॊधनम अमर्षितः सहसा संनिवृत्तॊ ऽभूच छरियं दृष्ट्वा सुयॊधने
Seeing Duryodhana thus, Yudhishthira was overcome with anger and abruptly turned away at the sight of his prosperity.
बरुवन्न उच्चैर वचस तान वै नाहं दुर्यॊधनेन वै सहितः कामये लॊकाँल लुब्धेनादीर्घ दर्शिना
Speaking loudly he said, "I do not wish to share these worlds with Duryodhana, the greedy one lacking foresight."
यत्कृते पृथिवी सर्वा सुहृदॊ बान्धवास तथा हतास्माभिः परसह्याजौ कलिष्टैः पूर्वं महावने
"Because of him the whole earth and our friends and kinsmen were slain by us in the harsh war, after we had earlier suffered greatly in the forest."
दरौपदी च सभामध्ये पाञ्चाली धर्मचारिणी परिक्लिष्टानवद्याङ्गी पत्नी नॊ गुरुसंनिधौ
"And Draupadi, the righteous princess of Panchala, our blameless-limbed wife, was humiliated in the assembly in the presence of our elders."
सवस्ति देवा न मे कामः सुयॊधनम उदीक्षितुम तत्राहं गन्तुम इच्छामि यत्र ते भरातरॊ मम
"Farewell, O gods, I have no wish to look upon Duryodhana. I wish to go where my brothers are."
मैवम इत्य अब्रवीत तं तु नारदः परहसन्न इव सवर्गे निवासॊ राजेन्द्र विरुद्धं चापि नश्यति
Narada, smiling, told him not to speak so, saying that in heaven residence and hostility likewise perish, O lord of kings.
युधिष्ठिर महाबाहॊ मैवं वॊचः कथं चन दुर्यॊधनं परति नृपं शृणु चेदं वचॊ मम
"O mighty-armed Yudhishthira, never speak thus regarding King Duryodhana; hear these my words."
एष दुर्यॊधनॊ राजा पूज्यते तरिदशैः सह सद्भिश च राजप्रवरैर य इमे सवर्गवासिनः
"This King Duryodhana is honored along with the thirty gods and with the good and foremost kings who dwell in heaven."
वीरलॊकगतिं पराप्तॊ युद्धे हुत्वात्मनस तनुम यूयं सवर्गे सुरसमा येना युद्धे समासिताः
"He attained the world of heroes by offering his own body in war; you all, equal to gods, were seated in heaven because of that very war."
स एष कषत्रधर्मेण सथानम एतद अवाप्तवान भये महति यॊ ऽभीतॊ बभूव पृथिवीपतिः
"By the duty of a kshatriya he attained this place, he who, ruler of the earth, remained fearless amid great danger."
न तन मनसि कर्तव्यं पुत्र यद दयूतकारितम दरौपद्याश च परिक्लेशं न चिन्तयतुम अर्हसि
"O son, you should not take to heart what was done through the game of dice, nor should you dwell on Draupadi's suffering."
ये चान्ये ऽपि परिक्लेशा युष्माकं दयूतकारिताः संग्रामेष्व अथ वान्यात्र न तान संस्मर्तुम अर्हसि
"And whatever other sufferings befell you all through the dice game, whether in battle or elsewhere, you should not recall them."
समागच्छ यथान्यायं राज्ञा दुर्यॊधनेन वै सवर्गॊ ऽयं नेह वैराणि भवन्ति मनुजाधिप
"Approach King Duryodhana as is fitting; O lord of men, here in heaven no enmities remain."
नारदेनैवम उक्तस तु कुरुराजॊ युधिष्ठिरः भरातॄन पप्रच्छ मेधावी वाक्यम एतद उवाच ह
Thus addressed by Narada, the wise Kuru king Yudhishthira questioned his brothers and spoke these words.
यदि दुर्यॊधनस्यैते वीरलॊकः सनातनाः अधर्मज्ञस्य पापस्य पृथिवी सुहृद अद्रुहः
"If these eternal worlds of heroes belong to Duryodhana, the wicked one ignorant of righteousness, an enemy to friends of the earth,"
यत्कृते पृथिवी नष्टा सहया सरथ दविपा वयं च मन्युना दग्धा वैरं परतिचिकीर्षवः
"because of whom the whole earth, along with its cavalry, chariots, and elephants, was destroyed, and we, burning with grief, sought to avenge that wrong -"
ये ते वीरा महात्मानॊ भरातरॊ मे महाव्रताः सत्यप्रतिज्ञा लॊकस्य शूरा वै सत्यवादिनः
"those heroic, great-souled brothers of mine of firm vows, true to their promises to the world, brave and truthful in speech -"
तेषाम इदानीं के लॊका दरष्टुम इच्छामि तान अहम कर्णं चैव महात्मानं कौन्तेयं सत्यसंगरम
"which worlds do they now inhabit? I wish to see them - both the great-souled Karna, the son of Kunti, true to his word,"
धृष्टद्युम्नं सात्यकिं च धृष्टद्युम्नस्य चात्मजान ये च शस्त्रैर वधं पराप्ताः कषत्रधर्मेण पार्थिवाः
"and Dhrishtadyumna, Satyaki, and Dhrishtadyumna's sons, and those kings who met death by weapons in accordance with kshatriya duty."
कव नु ते पार्थिवा बरह्मन्न एतान पश्यामि नारद विराटद्रुपदौ चैव धृष्टकेतुमुखांश च तान
"Where are those kings, O brahmin Narada? I do not see them here - Virata, Drupada, and Dhrishtaketu and others like them."
शिखण्डिनं च पाञ्चाल्यं दरौपदेयांश च सर्वशः अभिमन्युं च दुर्धर्षं दरष्टुम इच्छामि नारद
"I wish to see Shikhandin, the prince of Panchala, and all the sons of Draupadi, and the indomitable Abhimanyu, O Narada."
[य] नेह पश्यामि विबुधा राधेयम अमितौजसम भरातरौ च महात्मानौ युधामन्यूत्तमौजसौ
[Yudhishthira] "O wise ones, I do not see here the son of Radha of measureless prowess, nor the two great-souled brothers Yudhamanyu and Uttamaujas,"
जुहुवुर ये शरीराणि रणवह्नौ महारथाः राजानॊ राजपुत्राश च ये मदर्थे हता रणे
"the great warriors, kings and princes who offered their bodies in the fire of battle, who were slain in the war fighting for my sake."
कव ते महारथाः सर्वे शार्दूलसमविक्रमाः तैर अप्य अयं जितॊ लॊकः कच चित पुरुषसत्तमैः
"Where are all those great warriors, valiant as tigers? By them too was this world conquered, were it not, O best of men?"
यदि लॊकान इमान पराप्तास ते च सर्वे महारथाः सथितं वित्तहि मां देवाः सहितं तैर महात्मभिः
"If those great warriors have reached these worlds, then know, O gods, that I too wish to dwell united with those great souls."
कच चिन न तैर अवाप्तॊ ऽयं नृपैर लॊकॊ ऽकषयः शुभः न तैर अहं विना वत्स्ये जञातिभिर भरातृभिस तथा
"Have those kings not attained this pure, imperishable world? I shall not dwell without them, my kinsmen and brothers."
मातुर हि वचनं शरुत्वा तदा सलिलकर्मणि कर्णस्य करियतां तॊयम इति तप्यामि तेन वै
"Remembering my mother's words spoken at the water rite - that water offerings should be made for Karna - I am tormented by that thought."
इदं च परितप्यामि पुनः पुनर अहं सुराः यन मातुः सदृशौ पादौ तस्याहम अमितौजसः
"And, O gods, I am tormented again and again by this - that I, though seeing his feet resembling my mother's, did not follow that Karna of measureless prowess."
दृष्ट्वैव तं नानुगतः कर्णं परबलार्दनम न हय अस्मान कर्ण सहिताञ जयेच छक्रॊ ऽपि संयुगे
"Had we not deserted that crusher of enemy armies, even Indra could not have defeated us, joined with Karna, in battle."
तम अहं यत्र तत्रस्थं दरष्टुम इच्छामि सूर्यजम अविज्ञातॊ मया यॊ ऽसौ घातितः सव्यसाचिना
"Wherever he may be, I wish to see that son of the Sun, who was unknowingly slain by Arjuna, the left-handed archer."
भीमं च भीमविक्रान्तं पराणेभ्यॊ ऽपि परियं मम अर्जुनं चेन्द्र संकाशं यमौ तौ च यमॊपमौ
"And Bhima of terrible prowess, dearer to me than life itself, and Arjuna equal to Indra, and the twins who are like Ashvins."
दरष्टुम इच्छामि तां चाहं पाञ्चालीं धर्मचारिणीम न चेह सथातुम इच्छामि सत्यम एतद बरवीमि वः
"I wish to see the righteous princess of Panchala, and I truly tell you that I do not wish to remain here without them."
किं मे भरातृविहीनस्य सवर्गेण सुरसत्तमाः यत्र ते स मम सवर्गॊ नायं सवर्गॊ मतॊ मम
"O best of gods, what use is heaven to me deprived of my brothers? Only where they are is heaven to me - this is not heaven in my reckoning."
[देवाह] यदि वै तत्र ते शरद्धा गम्यतां पुत्र माचिरम परिये हि तव वर्तामॊ देवराजस्य शासनात
[The gods] "If that is your wish, O son, go there without delay; we act by the command of the king of gods, as is pleasing to you."
[वै] इत्य उक्त्वा तं ततॊ देवा देवदूतम उपादिशम युधिष्ठिरस्य सुहृदॊ दर्शयेति परंतप
[Vaishampayana] Having said this, O scorcher of foes, the gods instructed a divine messenger to show Yudhishthira his kinsmen.
ततः कुन्तीसुतॊ राजा देवदूतश च जग्मतुः सहितौ राजशार्दूल यत्र ते पुरुषर्षभाः
Then, O tiger among kings, the son of Kunti and the divine messenger together set out to where those bulls among men were.
अग्रतॊ देवदूतस तु ययौ राजा च पृष्ठतः पन्थानम अशुभं दुर्गं सेवितं पापकर्मभिः
The divine messenger walked ahead and the king followed behind, along an inauspicious, difficult path frequented by evildoers.
तपसा संवृतं घॊरं केशशौवल शाद्वलम युक्तं पापकृतां गन्धैर मांसशॊणितकर्दमम
It was dreadful, covered with dense growth like matted hair, filled with the stench of sinners, and muddy with flesh and blood.
दंशॊत्थानं सझिल्लीकं मक्षिका मशकावृतम इतश चेतश च कुणपैः समन्तात परिवारितम
It was infested with stinging insects, crickets, flies and mosquitoes, and surrounded on all sides by rotting corpses here and there.
अस्थि केशसमाकीर्णं कृमिकीट समाकुलम जवलनेन परदीप्तेन समन्तात परिवेष्टितम
It was strewn with bones and hair, teeming with worms and insects, and encircled on every side by blazing fire.
अयॊ मूखैश च काकॊलैर गृध्रैश च समभिद्रुतम सूचीमुखैस तथा परेतैर विन्ध्यशैलॊपमैर वृतम
It was overrun by iron-beaked crows, ravens and vultures, and surrounded by needle-mouthed departed spirits huge as the Vindhya mountains.
मेदॊ रुधिरयुक्तैश च छिन्नबाहूरुपाणिभिः निकृत्तॊदर पादैश च तत्र तत्र परवेरितैः
There were bodies drenched in fat and blood, with severed arms, thighs and hands, and torn-open bellies and legs strewn all about.
स तत कुणप दुर्गन्धम अशिवं रॊमहर्षणम जगाम राजा धर्मात्मा मध्ये बहु विचिन्तयन
Through that foul-smelling, terrible, hair-raising place the righteous king went, deeply troubled in mind.
ददर्शॊष्णॊदकैः पूर्णां नदीं चापि सुदुर्गमाम असि पत्रवनं चैव निशितक्षुर संवृतम
He saw a river filled with scalding water, very hard to cross, and a forest of sword-blade leaves surrounded by sharpened razors.
करम्भ वालुकास तप्ता आयसीश च शिलाः पृथक लॊहकुम्भीश च तैलस्य कवाथ्यमानाः समन्ततः
He saw scorching sand mixed with gruel, iron rocks lying about, and iron cauldrons of oil boiling on every side.
कूटशाल्मलिकं चापि दुस्पर्शं तिक्ष्ण कण्टकम ददर्श चापि कौन्तेयॊ यातनाः पापकर्मिणाम
The son of Kunti also saw the towering Shalmali tree, terrible to touch and covered with sharp thorns - the torments meted out to evildoers.
स तं दुर्गन्धम आलक्ष्य देवदूतम उवाच ह कियद अध्वानम अस्माभिर गन्तव्यम इदम ईदृशम
Perceiving that foul stench, he said to the divine messenger, "How much further must we travel on such a path as this?"
कव च ते भरातरॊ मह्यं तन ममाख्यातुम अर्हसि देशॊ ऽयं कश च देवानाम एतद इच्छामि वेदितुम
"Where are my brothers? You should tell me this. What is this place of the gods? I wish to know it."
स संनिववृते शरुत्वा धर्मराजस्य भाषितम देवदूतॊ ऽबरवीच चैनम एतावद गमनं तव
Hearing the words of the righteous king, the divine messenger turned and said to him, "This much is your journey."
निवर्तितव्यं हि मया तथास्म्य उक्तॊ दिवौकसैः यदि शरान्तॊ ऽसि राजेन्द्र तवम अथागन्तुम अर्हसि
"I must return, for so I was told by the celestials. O lord of kings, if you are weary, you too should come back."
युधिष्ठिरस तु निर्विण्णस तेन गन्धेन मूर्छितः निवर्तने धृतमनाः पर्यावर्तत भारत
Yudhishthira, O Bharata, sickened and dizzied by that stench, resolved to turn back and began to retrace his steps.
स संनिवृत्तॊ धर्मात्मा दुःखशॊकसमन्वितः शुश्राव तत्र वदतां दीना वाचः समन्ततः
Turning back, filled with grief and sorrow, the righteous king then heard pitiful voices speaking on every side.
भॊ भॊ धर्मज राजर्षे पुण्याभिजन पाण्डव अनुग्रहार्थम अस्माकं तिष्ठ तावन मुहूर्तकम
"O royal sage, son of Dharma, O Pandava of holy birth, stay a moment for our sake, to show us grace."
आयाति तवयि दुर्धर्षे वाति पुण्यः समीरणः तव गन्धानुगस तात येनास्मान सुखम आगमत
"As you approach, O invincible one, a holy breeze blows, carrying your fragrance to us, O son, from which we obtain comfort."
ते वयं पार्थ दीर्घस्य कालस्य पुरुषर्षभ सुखम आसादयिष्यामस तवां दृष्ट्वा राजसत्तम
"O son of Pritha, best of men, we, after so long a time, shall obtain happiness upon seeing you, O best of kings."
संतिष्ठस्व महाबाहॊ मुहूर्तम अपि भारत तवयि तिष्ठति कौरव्य यतनास्मान न बाधते
"Stay a moment, O mighty-armed one, O Bharata, O Kaurava; while you remain, the torment does not afflict us."
एवं बहुविधा वाचः कृपणा वेदनावताम तस्मिन देशे स शुश्राव समन्ताद वदतां नृप
O king, in that place he heard many such pitiful words spoken all around by those in torment.
तेषां तद वचनं शरुत्वा दयावान दीनभाषिणाम अहॊ कृच्छ्रम इति पराह तस्थौ स च युधिष्ठिरः
Hearing these pitiable words of the suffering ones, the compassionate Yudhishthira cried out, "Alas, what suffering!" and stopped there.
स ता गिरः पुरस्ताद वै शरुतपूर्वाः पुनः पुनः गलानानां दुःखितानां च नाभ्यजानत पाण्डवः
Though he had heard those voices of the suffering and grieving spoken before him again and again, the Pandava did not recognize whose they were.
अबुध्यमानस ता वाचॊ धर्मपुत्रॊ युधिष्ठिरः उवाच के भवन्तॊ वै किमर्थम इह तिष्ठथ
Not comprehending those voices, Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, said, "Who are you, and why do you remain here?"
इत्य उक्तास ते ततः सर्वे समन्ताद अवभाषिरे कर्णॊ ऽहं भीमसेनॊ ऽहम अर्जुनॊ ऽहम इति परभॊ
When he said this, all of them replied from every side, "I am Karna, I am Bhimasena, I am Arjuna, O lord!"
नकुलः सहदेवॊ ऽहं धृष्टद्युम्नॊ ऽहम इत्य उत दरौपदी दरौपदेयाश च इत्य एवं ते विचुक्रुशुः
"I am Nakula, I am Sahadeva, I am Dhrishtadyumna," and "Draupadi, and Draupadi's sons" - thus they all cried out.
ता वाचः सा तदा शरुत्वा तद देशसदृशीर नृप ततॊ विममृशे राजा किं नव इदं दैवकारितम
O king, hearing those voices fitting to that dreadful place, the king pondered - "Is this the working of fate?"
किं नु तत कलुषं कर्मकृतम एभिर महात्मभिः कर्णेन दरौपदेयैर वा पाञ्चाल्या वा सुमध्यया
"What sinful deed have these great souls done - Karna, or the sons of Draupadi, or the slender-waisted princess of Panchala?"
य इमे पापगन्धे ऽसमिन देशे सन्ति सुदारुणे न हि जानामि सर्वेषां दुष्कृतं पुण्यकर्मणाम
"I do not know what sinful act any of these virtuous ones, now present in this most terrible, foul-smelling place, could have committed."
किं कृत्वा धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रॊ राजसुयॊधनः तथा शरिया युतः पापः सह सर्वैः पदानुगैः
"What did Dhritarashtra's son, King Duryodhana, do, that sinful one, along with all his followers,"
महेन्द्र इव लक्ष्मीवान आस्ते परमपूजितः कस्येदानीं विकारॊ ऽयं यद इमे नरकं गतः
"that he sits like Mahendra, endowed with fortune and greatly honored - while whose reversal of fortune is this, that these have gone to hell?"
सर्वधर्मविदः शूराः सत्यागम परायणाः कषात्र धर्मपराः पराज्ञा यज्वानॊ भूरिदक्षिणाः
"These heroes knew all dharma, were devoted to truth and scripture, upheld kshatriya duty, were wise, and performed sacrifices with abundant gifts."
किं नु सुप्तॊ ऽसमि जागर्मि चेतयानॊ न चेतये अहॊ चित्तविकारॊ ऽयं सयाद वा मे चित्तविभ्रमः
"Am I asleep, or am I awake and conscious yet not perceiving rightly? Alas, is this some derangement, or is my mind confused?"
एवं बहुविधं राजा विममर्श युधिष्ठिरः दुःखशॊकसमाविष्टश चिन्ताव्याकुलितेन्द्रियः
Thus King Yudhishthira pondered in many ways, overwhelmed with grief and sorrow, his senses agitated by anxiety.
करॊधम आहारयच चैव तीव्रं धर्मसुतॊ नृपः देवांश च गर्हयाम आस धर्मं चैव युधिष्ठिरः
The king, son of Dharma, gave way to intense anger, and Yudhishthira began to reproach the gods and even Dharma itself.
स तीव्रगन्धसंतप्तॊ देवदूतम उवाच ह गम्यतां भद्र येषां तवं दूतस तेषाम उपान्तिकम
Tormented by that intense stench, he said to the divine messenger, "Go, good sir, back to those whose messenger you are."
न हय अहं तत्र यास्म्यामि सथितॊ ऽसमीति निवेद्यताम मत संश्रयाद इमे दूत सुखिनॊ भरातरॊ हि मे
"I shall not go there; let it be reported that I remain here. Because of my presence, O messenger, these my brothers find comfort."
इत्य उक्तः स तदा दूतः पाण्डुपुत्रेण धीमता जगाम तत्र यत्रास्ते देवराजः शतक्रतुः
Thus addressed by the wise son of Pandu, the messenger went to where Indra, the lord of the gods, the wielder of a hundred sacrifices, resided.
निवेदयाम आस च तद धर्मराज चिकीर्षितम यथॊक्तं धर्मपुत्रेण सर्वम एव जनाधिप
O lord of men, he reported to Indra all that the son of Dharma intended, exactly as it had been spoken by the righteous king.
[वै] सथिते मुहूर्तं पार्थे तु धर्मराजे युधिष्ठिरे आजग्मुस तत्र कौरव्य देवाः शक्रपुरॊगमाः
O Kaurava, when Yudhishthira, the righteous son of Pandu, had rested a moment, the gods headed by Shakra (Indra) arrived there.
सवयं विग्रहवान धर्मॊ राजानं परसमीक्षितुम तत्राजगाम यत्रासौ कुरुराजॊ युधिष्ठिरः
Dharma himself, in embodied form, also came there to see King Yudhishthira, lord of the Kurus.
तेषु भास्वरदेहेषु पुण्याभिजन कर्मसु समागतेषु देवेषु वयगमत तत तमॊ नृप
O king, when those radiant, holy-deeded gods gathered there, all darkness vanished from that place.
नादृश्यन्त च तास तत्र यातनाः पापकर्मिणाम नदी वैतरणी चैव कूटशाल्मलिना सह
There, no torments of sinners were seen any longer, nor the river Vaitarani, nor the terrible Kutashalmali tree.
लॊहकुम्भ्यः शिलाश चैव नादृश्यन्त भयानकाः विकृतानि शरीराणि यानि तत्र समन्ततः ददर्श राजा कौन्तेयस तान्य अदृश्यानि चाभवन
The iron cauldrons and fearsome rocks were no longer visible, and the mutilated bodies that King Yudhishthira had seen everywhere there had disappeared.
ततॊ वयुः सुखस्पर्शः पुण्यगन्धवहः शिवः ववौ देवसमीपस्थः शीतलॊ ऽतीव भारत
O Bharata, then near the gods a pleasant, cool breeze began to blow, auspicious and laden with holy fragrance.
मरुतः सह शक्रेण वसवश चाश्विनौ सह साध्या रुद्रास तथादित्या ये चान्ये ऽपि दिवौकसः
The Maruts with Shakra, the Vasus with the Ashvins, the Sadhyas, the Rudras, the Adityas, and other dwellers of heaven —
सर्वे तत्र समाजग्मुः सिद्धाश च परमर्षयः यत्र राजा महातेजा धर्मपुत्रः सथितॊ ऽभवत
all of them, together with the Siddhas and great sages, gathered where the mighty king, son of Dharma, was standing.
ततः शक्रः सुरपतिः शरिया परमया युतः युधिष्ठिरम उवाचेदं सान्त्वपूर्वम इदं वचः
Then Shakra, lord of the gods, glowing with supreme splendor, spoke these soothing words to Yudhishthira.
युधिष्ठिर महाबाहॊ परीता देवगणास तव एह्य एहि पुरुषव्याघ्र कृतम एतावता विभॊ सिद्धिः पराप्ता तवया राजँल लॊकाश चाप्य अक्षयास तव
"O mighty-armed Yudhishthira, tiger among men, the hosts of gods are pleased with you; come, come, lord — you have achieved enough, you have attained perfection, and your worlds too are imperishable."
न च मन्युस तवया कार्यः शृणु चेदं वचॊ मम अवश्यं नरकस तात दरष्टव्यः सर्वराजभिः
"You need not feel resentment; hear this word of mine — every king must inevitably behold hell, dear one."
शुभानाम अशुभानां च दवौ राशीपुरुषर्षभ यः पूर्वं सुकृतं भुङ्क्ते पश्चान निरयम एति सः पूर्वं नरकभाग्यस तु पश्चात सवगम उपैति सः
"There are two heaps, O bull among men — of good deeds and of evil deeds; he who first enjoys the fruit of good deeds afterward goes to hell, while he who first bears hell's portion afterward attains heaven."
भूयिष्ठं पापकर्मा यः स पूर्वं सवर्गम अश्नुते तेन तवम एवं गमितॊ मया शरेयॊ ऽरथिना नृप
"He whose evil deeds far outweigh his good enjoys heaven first; wishing your good, O king, I therefore led you through this in that manner."
वयाजेन हि तवया दरॊण उपचीर्णः सुतं परति वयाजेनैव ततॊ राजन दर्शितॊ नरकस तव
"It was only by an illusion that Drona was deceived concerning his son, and only by illusion, O king, that hell was shown to you."
यथैव तवं तथा भीमस तथा पार्थॊ यमौ तथा दरौपदी च तथा कृष्णा वयाजेन नरकं गताः
"Just as with you, so with Bhima, with Arjuna, with the twins, and with Draupadi-Krishna — all of you were made to see hell only through this illusion."
आगच्छ नरशार्दूल मुक्तास ते चैव किल्बिषात सवपक्षाश चैव ये तुभ्यं पार्थिवा निहता रणे सर्वे सवर्गम अनुप्राप्तास तान पश्य पुरुषर्षभ
"Come, tiger among men, you are all freed from that sin; behold, bull among men, all the kings of your own side slain in battle have attained heaven."
कर्णश चैव महेष्वासः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः स गतः परमां सिद्धिं यदर्थं परितप्यसे
"Karna too, the great archer, foremost among all wielders of weapons — he for whose sake you grieve — has attained supreme perfection."
तं पश्य पुरुषव्याघ्रम आदित्यतनयं विभॊ सवस्थानस्थं महाबाहॊ जहि शॊकं नरर्षभ
"Behold him, tiger among men, the son of Aditya (the Sun), O mighty-armed one, established in his own rightful place; cast off your sorrow, bull among men."
भरातॄंश चान्यांस तथा पश्य सवपक्षांश चैव पार्थिवान सवं सवं सथानम अनुप्राप्तान वयेतु ते मानसॊ जवरः
"Behold your brothers and the other kings of your side too, each having reached his own proper place; let the fever of your mind depart."
अनुभूय पूर्वं तवं कृच्छ्रम इतः परभृति कौरव विहरस्व मया सार्धं गतशॊकॊ निरामयः
"Having endured hardship till now, O Kaurava, henceforth dwell in happiness with me, free from sorrow and free from affliction."

What is the Mahabharata?
The Mahabharata is the great Sanskrit itihasa (epic) composed by Maharishi Vyasa, telling of the Kuru dynasty and the war between the Pandavas and the Kauravas at Kurukshetra. In its eighteen parvas (books) it contains the Bhagavad Gita, the Vishnu Sahasranama and a vast treasury of dharma, and is revered as the fifth Veda.
