Introduction Rishi Panchami is observed on the fifth day after Ganesh Chaturthi. It is not for the usual desires of wealth or marriage, but specifically for the cleansing of sins, particularly those committed unknowingly (often related to menstrual impurities in traditional beliefs).
The Story (Vrat Katha) In the Vidarbha country, there lived a Brahmin named Uttank. He had a devoted wife and a widowed daughter. One night, the daughter was sleeping when ants covered her body. Her parents were shocked.
The Brahmin used his spiritual powers to find the cause. He realized that in her previous life, his daughter had entered the kitchen and touched holy utensils during her menstruation period (which was considered a violation of purity rules in ancient times). Additionally, she had neglected the Rishi Panchami Vrat. Because of these sins, she became a widow early and suffered now.
The father advised his daughter to perform the Rishi Panchami Vrat to cleanse her soul. She followed his advice. She worshipped the Saptarishis (Seven Sages) with full devotion, offered curds and rice, and sought forgiveness for her past mistakes.
Conclusion By the grace of the Saptarishis, she was freed from all her past sins (Doshas). Her body was healed, and she attained peace. This Vrat is observed to purify the body and soul from knowingly or unknowingly committed mistakes.
