Introduction The Pradosh Vrat is observed on the 13th day (Trayodashi) of both the waxing and waning moon cycles. “Pradosh” refers to the twilight period (sunset). It is believed that during this time, Lord Shiva performs the cosmic dance (Tandava) on Mount Kailash. Observing this fast removes negative karma and brings success.
The Story (Vrat Katha) There was once a poor Brahmin woman who was a widow. She wandered from place to place with her son, begging for alms. One day, she found a handsome prince sitting by the riverbank. His father’s kingdom had been captured by enemies, and he was left alone.
The kind Brahmin woman adopted the prince and raised him alongside her own son. They were poor but devoted. One day, the woman took both boys to a temple where a Sage (Rishi) advised them to observe the Pradosh Vrat to change their fortune.
They followed the Sage’s advice religiously. Years passed, and the boys grew up. One day, the prince went to the forest and met some Gandharva princesses. The Gandharva King, pleased with the prince, married his daughter to him.
With the help of the Gandharva army, the Prince defeated his enemies and regained his father’s kingdom. He did not forget his foster family; he made the Brahmin woman’s son his Prime Minister. They all lived happily.
Conclusion This story illustrates that the Pradosh Vrat has the power to turn poverty into royalty and despair into victory.
